40 Days of Activity
I have been inspired to attempt 40_Days_of_Activity_for_Lent, from my friend, K. Realistically, I will not accomplish 40 days, but more than what I am currently doing will be fantastic. I have an extra pair of walking shoes sitting in my office at work, ready for a quick lunch time jaunt. And, as K said, "Yeah, for motivation via Jesus". Days of 40 degrees always help!

10 Items or Less
Eric informed me of the increased use of public libraries during this slow economic season we are experiencing. Activities of increased use include the computer for job searches, movies for entertainment, books, etc.
~~~~~~~~~~
We have recently begun a Friday afternoon ritual of heading to the library straight from picking up the little ones from the sitter's. LOVE the children's section on a Friday afternoon, it actually becomes our section as we are the only patrons. Anyway, we pick up movies for "family movie night" and I pick up a movie or 2-3 and hope for a good one for an in-home "date night"! The only trouble is to return them 3 days later to avoid the $1 a day overdue fine! So, this weekend Eric and I watched and thoroughly enjoyed "10 Items or Less". Actually, I was so into it, but still fell asleep. Usually I don't care and never finish the movies I sleep through. However this one I needed to finish on Sunday afternoon! We highly recommend this movie to anyone! So, look for my new column on the side entitled "10 Items or Less" with total inspiration from this flick!
A Do-Over
So today did not start out very well, causing me to wish for a morning do-over:
- As I pulled out the mini-bagel from the toaster oven, the top slips to the bottom of the oven and rests against the heating element. Instant flames.
- Forget about 2nd mini-bagel in the toaster oven. Over done, black, and not so edible. Fickle toaster and mini-bagel mahem!
- Pull out the eggs from the microwave, (aah, love the pyrex) and upon attempting to tip them out onto the 3rd toast, they slipped all the way to the floor.
- See Norah standing next to the table holding Simon's cup of milk upside down. Safe zone is now the middle of the table, only!
- Catch Norah with the roll of toilet paper at her ankles. After closing the bathroom door three times. Who left it open?!?!?!
- All of this happend before 9:00 a.m.!
And at 3:14 p.m., I still need to get ready for the day. A.k.a, still in my pajamas!
Perspectives
I went to a small and lovely baby shower this weekend, and I again realized the importance of perspectives. The conversation was along the lines of the early days of bringing home baby and experiencing the lack of sleep and not knowing what to do with baby. I sat there thinking and could not recall ever complaining about being so tired, frustrated, and unsure. We definitely experienced those emotions. This is where perspective comes into play. You see, because of this_precious_boy, we were ecstatic to be exhausted, embraced the frustration, rejoiced to hear crying, and prayed for Aaron and Christa. And we still pray for them. Their tiny boy has shaped how I have mothered and loved since the beginning of Simon.
100 Little Tidbits About Me (Part III)
51. E-Mail was introduced to me at Elmhurst College. I was apalled when graduate school professors required e-mail correspondance as part of a course. It was not convenient at the time.
52. I have lived in 6 cities within 3 states. I spent my childhood in Green Bay, WI, high school was in St. Paul, undergraduate was in Elmhurst, graduate school was in Madison, first adult apartment was in Glen Ellyn, first house is in Villa Park.
54. Friends from each stage in life have been lost or have become really distant, and not as close.
55. I miss those friends.
56. My Dad sent my postcards every week or more to my mailbox #911 at Elmhurst College. I have them in an album.
57. I also have Valentine cards he made me when I was little.
58. When on vacation, the only souvenior I desire is a Christmas ornament.
59. I am afraid of forgetting precious baby moments and these early years.
60. I cherish holding my precious little ones.
61. I sometimes don't feel like the responsibility-filled adult that I am.
62. I am annoyed when people are late. I prefer to be 10-15 minutes early, but with 2 kids that has become quite difficult. I am now sometimes late :(
63. I like mayonnaise, not Miracle Whip.
64. My favorite flowers are lilacs and daisies.
65. I cut flowers from my garden all summer and fall long and bring them in the house.
66. I am anticipating the arrival of these.
67. Sandwiches and salads taste better when someone else makes them.
68. I have looked at a real brain.
69. I have diagnosed young children as speech and language impaired, and then helped them and their parents to reduce their delays.
70. My first ear infection was in college.
71. I was so sick in college that my roommate once pretended to "unzip my fur", an analogy from Ren and Stimpy.
72. I. hate. puking.
73. My car did not start the morning after Eric proposed. I thought "that's okay, I'm engaged". I biked to work. It was 9/9/99.
74. I want to make every holiday special by doing the little things like my Mom did for me.
75. My honeymoon has been the best vacation so far.
100 Little Tidbits About Me (Part II)
26. I love to read and I read the most in summer. I get so consumed in the book that I cannot put it down.
27. I wish I could enjoy yogurt, I keep trying different brands, flavors, textures. Still don't enjoy it.
28. I swallowed my first "I never" statement. Pre-kids I said "I will never bring snacks in church". Cheerios, fruit snacks and a drink helped Simon survive through the sermon. They will soon help Norah.
29. I am so grateful that our church encourages, enjoys, and tolerates children in church. We are worshipping as a family!
30. I plant a garden every year: herbs a-plenty, some routine vegetables, and one new vegetable every year.
31. My perennial garden receives little to no care from me, they are perennial after all!
32. I serve our meals on the front porch whenever possible.
33. I became teary the first time our children were blessed at communion.
34. I have to say good-night to someone every night. My first college roommate thought I was crazy.
35. The first time I saw my graduate school apartment and met my roommate was the day I moved in, by myself.
36. I only applied to one college (for undergraduate). My Dad kept saying "the U of M is a good school. How about Bethel?"
37. Purses, bags, and shoes are not denied in my closet. I am often questioned "So which pair are you getting rid of ?" when another pair joins the ranks!
38. I can now make very quick decisions and not second guess myself.
39. I value Eric's insight and wisdom. He always says the best thing at the right time.
40. My uncle helped me to be the person I am, just by listening.
41. At one point, I told God that my Mom had suffered and endured enough and maybe it was time for Him to take her.
42. I told #41 to my dear friend Kathy, in Wal-Mart. I was purchasing items for my trip to MN to visit my ill mother.
43. I have very fond memories of visiting my Grandparents in rural MN.
44. Eric's family, immediate and extended, is incredible!
45. I miss dozing, reading, sunning, and lounging at the pool!
46. I think the name "Rebecca" is beautiful and I am Rebecca at work.
47. I thought the "key-key" in Becky Luedtke was not professional.
48. I smile at every snowman I see.
49. I could not imagine living anywhere that did not have 4 distinct seasons. There is something about the crisp fall, first snow, early buds, and warm temperatures that stirs the soul.
50. I embraced the year of the cicadas. I picked them up, put them in toy trucks, knocked the shells off the trees with sticks, and analyzed them wherever we found them. All thanks to a curious little boy who did not know they were icky. (They really were icky!)
27. I wish I could enjoy yogurt, I keep trying different brands, flavors, textures. Still don't enjoy it.
V-Day Menu
I have recently embraced, love, and look forward to Valentine's Day! I love doing little Valentiney things! This year, it falls on a Saturday, which in my opinion would cause all restaurants and other evening venues to be packed and over crowded! Not my cup of tea. I do not look forward to finding a sitter, making a reservation, and still waiting way too long to pay way too much for super yummy food. But, I want to mark the day as different, romantic, and date-like.
~~~~~~~~~~
Here is the plan. The day will be packed with outdoor or activity filled events to tire out one little boy without a nap (completed by Eric as I will be at a baby shower). This, in theory, ensures an early bedtime. Then, while the kiddos snooze their little brains out, Eric and I will prepare our own yummy dinner. Just think, a tablecloth without big binder clips, candles that aren't declared "birthday candles", mood music, gorgeous, breakable glassware and china, sophisticated food, and adult drinks! Since this meal will be later than our normal dinner time, we are thinking tapas/appetizers. My idea is constant eating without feeling sickly stuffed. Here are some ideas, thanks to cooks.com, and if any of my few readers has a fantastic recipe or idea, please share!! Will keep you posted on the final menu.Apple-Pear Salad with Havarti
Baked Stuffed Clams
Shrimp Cocktail
Crusty, Rustic Bread
Marinated Olives, Red Pepper and Artichoke Hearts
Need a spectacular salad/vegetable - please help!

100 Little Tidbits About Me (Part I)
I recently wrote 25 Random Things About Me on Facebook and I decided to list them here as well. When I first started typing, I really had no idea what to share. Nothing, or very little came to mind. Seriously, who talks about themselves that much - it felt a little like bragging. Once the ideas came rolling, I was slightly disappointed to arrive at #25. A friend of mine blogged "100 Things About Me" in a series of 4 entries. I so enjoyed reading them, I will adopt her series - kuddos to K! So here goes.
100 Little Tidbits About Me (Part I)
1. I am absolutely in love with my husband of 8 1/2 years!
2. I love my 2 beautiful children so much my heart hurts and tears appear!
3. I secretly love having a 2 bedroom house because my son and daughter have the neatest interactions due to sharing a room.
4. I conflictingly want a bigger house - with at least 3 bedrooms, 2 bedrooms, back yard and a bigger driveway, but don't want to leave my neighborhood.
5. The most difficult thing I learned in undergrad was making my own decisions.
6. My wedding ring sparkles the most in church.
7. I am proud that I paid my entire way through college and graduate school (even though I am still repaying my loans - it feels like I am paying to work - but my career allows me to work part-time!).
8. I can sew, crochet, knit, cross-stitch, scrapbook; but not much time for projects!
9. I was a member of a synchronized swim club in high school.
10. I played the French Horn and piano, and I currently ring the handbells in church.
11. I love to grocery shop and do not mind cooking. New recipes are fun and the end results are yummy!
12. I have met several New Year's Resolutions.
13. I am my parents Power of Attorney.
14. I donated both of my children's cord blood in honor of my Mom (a 2-time Leukemia survivor)!
15. I am a procastinator.
16. I could never sell a box of Girl Scout cookies, except to Grandma! I still cringe at fundraisers, and I threw out my son's preschool candy sale order form.
17. Someday, when I stop making my own and friends' handmade baby gifts I will crochet/sew blankets for Project Linus.
18. I was born and raised in Green Bay, WI, close enough to hear fans cheering wihen the Packers scored. I also walked to the Arena (across from Lambeau) from school to go to the circus on a field trip.
19. I enjoyed swinging in haylofts when I went with my Grandpa to help milk/test cows.
20. I can cheat in solitaire.
21. I take tons of pictures but don't have many printed from my camera or the computer.
22. Music calms my spirit and moves my soul.
23. I ditched high-school once on Senior Ditch Day. After I turned in my English paper, I went out to breakfast with friends, picked up my free mini cedar chest (I still have and use it), and went to the Mall of America. Fun times with Jo!
24. I love going out for breakfast.
25. My closest girlfriends are like sisters!

My recent days have been made possible by . . . .
patience from the One who has the most of it.
a cup of coffee in the morning, although one re-heat to finish.
a microwave.
a magic bullet to chomp up real food.
a crock pot.
a dishwasher.
an integral (sp?) bowl/kitchen sink.
a bumper jumper.
a cutting board - used all day long.

a Dyson vaccuum cleaner.
Endust.

50 Degrees and Smiling!
It's a heat wave, and did we enjoy the out of doors. Here are our weekend highlights!
Simon: What's wrong with your lip?
Me: They're dry, I have chapped lips. I need to put chapstick on them.
Simon: You mean mine?
Me: No, you don't have chapstick.
Simon: When you eat, on your lips?
Me: No, not when I eat.Simon: My chopsticks?Me: Oooh, no, chAp stick, not your chOpsticks!
~~~~~~~~~~
We went yesterday to a tiny nature preserve (behind the Barnes and Noble across from Oakbrook). It's really just a water retention pond surrounded by cement-ville, but my suburban boy doesn't know the difference yet. Anyway, we saw a bald eagle up close and it was beautful. We went prepared with rain boots and man, did Simon run and splash in the playground! Upon entering the car and driving home, Simon declared "I am a mess" as loud and as emphatic as possible. Needless to say he went straight to the bath.~~~~~~~~~~
We are conducting our snowman melt study. Pictures are taken periodically to document the disappearance of Mr. Snowman that has been hanging around our front yard for way too long. Seriously, he has been the longest living snowman I have ever known! And neighborhood riff raff never bothered him. Hmmm, must be a pretty good neighborhood!~~~~~~~~~~
Another HYSTERICAL story this morning:Simon: What's wrong with your lip?
Me: They're dry, I have chapped lips. I need to put chapstick on them.
Simon: You mean mine?
Me: No, you don't have chapstick.
Simon: When you eat, on your lips?
Me: No, not when I eat.Simon: My chopsticks?Me: Oooh, no, chAp stick, not your chOpsticks!
~~~~~~~~~~
Simon received trainer chopsticks from his "Japanese" Aunt and Uncle for Christmas. They are hinged with finger holes and he absolutely loves eating with them. He one time declared he did not want to eat dinner. I silently put the chopsticks by his plate and he ran so excitedly to the table and stated that the food looked delicious!?!?!?!?~~~~~~~~~~
Sunday afternoon led us to the library to see Froggy in person, from Jonathon London's Froggy book series. Simon was completely enthralled and had an incredible story time. I would have to say it was the best story time I've been to and it was his personal best story time ever! He did not blink during the two Froggy stories!
~~~~~~~~~~
Another note of interest. I received a call from the cord blood donation center. The person told me someone was interested in my story (we donated both Simon's and Norah's cord blood and my Mom is alive because of some little baby's cord blood donation). I braced myself, because Channel 7 was interested a while ago. Nothing happened then because they wanted to do the story quick and my Mom wouldn't be here. I am not so sure I want to be 30 second evening news story. This time, though, it is a graduate student writing a paper. I will totally help out a student. We'll see if anything transpires.~~~~~~~~~~
An update on Little Miss Norah, well, she continues to go wherever we go. She doesn't wander away from us. She never declares that she wants to go home. She seems to enjoy all that we do. Her protests are loud and clear; she is most upset when a desired item is removed or she is removed from a desired destination. She has learned to scoot backwards down our two little stairs. She walks around the room and will take 1-2 steps if enticed by a very desirable object. She repeats sounds and simple words like crazy! Some things we've recently heard:
too too - when we play train and say choo choo
Mama and Dada - she repeats these
attempts to say boo when playing peek-a-boo
sh sh sh sh - she kept repeating this sound when shopping with me today
Norah is so very engaging and will "chat" to get attention and carry on a wonderful, nonsensical conversation. We love every sound we hear!!!!
